TWO FUTURES FOR BMW.
ONE TASK: TURN TECHNICAL POSSIBILITY INTO INSTITUTIONAL BELIEF.

PROBLEM

BMW was looking beyond the next model cycle: toward oceans, materials, mobility and a 15–25+ year future.

The Sea-Change Initiative asked how an automotive company could enter ocean responsibility without producing another sustainability campaign.

The Ultimate Ultimate Driving Experience asked what remained of BMW’s defining promise once the road disappeared.

Both territories came burdened with exhausted visual languages: oceans as corporate virtue, Mars as science fiction. The task was to give each proposition enough imaginative force — and enough connection to BMW’s identity — to move a board.

THE OCEAN, BEFORE THE CLAIM

Ocean plastics already possessed an established visual language: waste, catastrophe, distressed wildlife and corporate virtue rendered in blue and green.

We had to make the ocean feel like a frontier rather than an obligation — to give BMW a reason to enter the subject before asking the company to announce a position on it.

THE IMAGE IS THE MOVE

I found the project’s visual center in Rajan, the last ocean-swimming elephant of the Andaman Islands.

Rajan gave Sea-Change an image capable of holding scale, strangeness and calm at once. The ocean could be encountered again before it was converted into corporate language.

The motion fragment held that encounter open for a few seconds longer.

THE SYSTEM BENEATH THE IMAGE

The symbol was never asked to substitute for substance.

Work with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Parley for the Oceans grounded the initiative in filtration systems, algae-based polymers, upcycled maritime plastics and circular design frameworks.

Material flows and system maps connected ocean recovery to research, research to new materials, and materials to future products. The work treated the ocean not as a cause BMW could sponsor, but as a field in which engineering and responsibility could meet.

The image established why the future mattered and the system established where BMW could act.

WHEN THE ROAD DISAPPEARS

MARS AS TERRAIN

I developed the concept and visual language for the Mars Terrain Initiative.

The work combined aerospace restraint, German minimalism, technical imagery and planetary scale. Mars was treated as an engineering environment rather than science-fiction obsession.

Terrain, mobility, vehicle systems and human experience were organized into a single visual argument. BMW on Mars became an extension of the brand’s existing logic.

The point was not escape from Earth. It was to test whether BMW’s defining idea of performance — The Ultimate Driving Machine — could become The Ultimate Ultimate Driving Experience.

IMPACT

The work achieved its purpose: it changed what BMW could imagine.

Both the ocean and Mars moved from distant propositions into the company’s field of action.
BMW proceeded cautiously. In 2017-18, the X3 took a virtual drive across Mars; recycled maritime plastics later entered vehicle production.
